Cyril Chidiebere, a businessman from Lagos, has been detained on suspicion of trafficking drugs.

In a statement released on Sunday, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) spokesman, Femi Babafemi, claimed that the suspect and two of his freight agents, Peter Mejabi and Oyeyinka Babatunde, were all taken into custody on Friday, April 14.

They were all detained for their roles in the importation of 12 shipments of the cannabis variety Loud.

The medicines, according to him, weighed 6.50kg and were brought in from the United States as part of a combined cargo.

He added that the cargo’s arrival at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO) import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) was followed by a three-day intelligence-led operation before the arrest and seizure.

In a sting operation, Babafemi said, its exit from the airport was meticulously watched until the real importer, Chidiebere, was apprehended at his home in the Abraham Adesanya estate, Ajah, Lekki neighborhood of Lagos.

“Both Mejabi and Chidiebere have made useful statements to confirm that the latter has been involved in dealing on illicit drugs in the past,” he said.
