The impeachment of Rt Hon. Chinedum Orji, Speaker of the state House of Assembly, has prompted a response from Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

In a plenary meeting on Tuesday, 18 of the assembly’s 27 members impeached Orji, according to news reports, and elected Hon. Chukwudi Apugo as the new speaker.

Apugo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who represents Umuahia-East, reportedly proposed the impeachment motion, while Okey Igwe of the PDP, who represents the Umunneochi seat, reportedly seconded it.

Ikpeazu said it will absolutely make no sense to engage in any issue that is likely to throw the state into disarray with just over a month till the end of his administration and the inauguration of a new one.

He clarified that his main concern is how to steer the ship of state into the new government in a calm and steady manner while tying up all administrative matters, including the completion of important projects.

He pleaded with Hon. Chinedum Orji, Speaker of the State Assembly, and Assembly Members to preserve calm and let patriotism and logic govern their actions.

Ikpeazu would be meeting with the quarrelling lawmakers in a few hours, according to Vanguard.
