The discharge certificate being shown by the candidate for governor of Enugu State, Barr Peter Mbah, was not granted by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), according to Brig Gen YD Ahmed, Director General of the organization.

The debate about whether Mbah has a legitimate NYSC certificate or not does not arise, according to Brig Gen Ahmed, who was a guest on Arise Television’s breakfast show on Friday. He informed the PDP candidate for the governorship elections in 2023 that the document he had provided was fraudulent.

“He came to me and I called my director to confirm the certificate and we discovered that the certificate was fake and I told him…I wonder how elites who have gone to school will resort to black market certificates.

“Everyone knows how we issue our certificate in NYSC we don’t give it in hotel rooms or houses,” the DG said.

According to reports, Peter Mbah has sued the NYSC, seeking N20 billion in compensation for the harms he alleges his release certificate’s problems caused him.

The issue regarding Mbah’s discharge certificate came to light in February 2023 when the NYSC published a letter claiming that the certificate presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was not issued by them in response to a request from a non-governmental organization.

Following yet another enquiry by Silver & Co. Associates, a law company with its headquarters in Aba, another letter repudiating the certificate was issued in April 2023.

The NYSC Director General stated that he was not aware of any lawsuit filed by Mbah and would not respond based only on hearsay.

“Concerning the suit, the NYSC has not been sued. I am yet to see anything from any court, all you are saying, I have been hearing from outside. I have not received any court order, but I must tell you, we do not tolerate certificate racketeering. If it is from any of our staff, that is not our problem. But that certificate is not from us,” he asserted.

The controversy surrounding Peter Mbah’s NYSC discharge certificate has spread across the country and called attention to the likelihood that many candidates for public office may be elected with fictitious credentials.

Mbah recently succeeded in getting an injunction from an Abuja-based Federal High Court prohibiting the NYSC and any of its employees from commenting on the contentious certificate through the assistance of his attorney, Emeka Ozoani, SAN.
