Cleaner Arrested For Stealing Laptop

Kemi Salawu, a cleaner at the Yaba College of Technology, was charged by the Lagos State Police Command on Monday with stealing an HP laptop worth N633,700.

The 54-year-old woman was charged with one count of stealing in front of the Yaba Magistrates’ Court, which was presided over by Magistrate O.Y. Adefope.

One of her bosses, Femi Faduru, reportedly had a laptop that was reported missing after she cleaned his office and left.

The complainant gave the defendant the key to his office and ordered her to clean it and return the key, but after doing so, the prosecutor, Chekwube Okey, who was representing Haruna Magaji, said that she took the laptop.

According to Okey, the defendant committed the offence on April 26, 2023, at the YABATECH premises.
The charge read in part, “That you, Kemi Salawu, on April 26, 2023, around 8am at YABATECH premises in the Lagos Magisterial District did steal one HP laptop valued at N633, 700, property of one Femi Faduru, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 280(1) and punishable under Section 287 (1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The magistrate granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000.

He adjourned the case till June 14, 2023.
