Yahaya Bello, the governor of Kogi State, was reportedly ambushed by unidentified gunmen while traveling in his convoy.

According to Newsmen, the event happened on Saturday at around 12:30 pm when the governor was traveling from Abuja to Lokoja, the seat of Kogi State.

A few kilometers from the Naval facility, the thugs apparently waited for the governor’s convoy.

The incident was confirmed by the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, in a statement released on Saturday.

The commissioner asserted that Muritala Yakubu Ajaka, the current candidate for governor of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the Kogi State governorship election on November 11, sent the thugs on behalf of the former APC deputy publicity office.

He said, “The supporters of the SDP Governorship candidate, having sighted Governor Bello’s convoy, blocked the road, and some of his armed thugs started shooting sporadically at the convoy of the Governor.

“A Tundra branded with the logo of the SDP and with SDP flags also blocked the Governor’s vehicle, and occupants of the SDP-branded Tundra were armed with rifles and shotguns. The Governor left the scene unscathed, and there is no cause for panic as the Governor is in high spirits”.

Fanwo, however, encouraged APC leaders in the state to avoid engaging in retaliatory violence and to maintain their composure while security personnel are in charge of the situation.
