Kayode Egbetokun, the acting Inspector-General of Police appointed by President Bola Tinubu on Monday, is set to retire from the Nigeria Police Force on September 4, 2024.
This is in accordance with the civil service regulation, which demands retirement at the age of 60 or after 35 years of service, whichever comes first.
If Egbetokun is approved as the Inspector-General of Police, Tinubu’s nomination will be comparable to that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who appointed a police official slated to retire during his tenure.

An IG’s term is four years, according to the Police Act of 2020.
Egbetokun joined the Nigeria Police Force on March 3, 1990, after being born on September 4, 1964.
His academic credentials include degrees in Mathematics, Engineering Analysis, Petroleum Economics, and an MBA.
He previously served as the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department.

If confirmed, Egbetokun’s stint as IG will remain until his retirement in 2024, according to civil service rules.
