Luke Laidley, a 43-year-old father and 9/11 attack survivor, passed away after attempting to save a number of children from drowning.
Around 1:30 pm on Tuesday, the trio was hauling a raft filled with children as they celebrated the Fourth of July near Chicago’s Elder Beach on Lake Michigan. Suddenly, the boat capsized.

Winnetka fire officials told ABC 7 Chicago on Thursday that Laidley dived into the water right away to help several of the kids who couldn’t swim.
According to the officials, he was submerged in the water for roughly a minute before he and the kids were saved.

The reports added that CPR was performed on him before he was rushed to Evanston Hospital where he died hours later.
