The Federal Government’s ‘no work, no pay’ approach towards its members has been denounced by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).

The no work, no pay policy would be applied to the striking physicians, according to news reports that the Federal Government had instructed the Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of the Federal Tertiary Hospitals to do.

The government instructed the hospitals to keep an attendance log for all resident doctors who are available to work in a circular issued on Thursday.

According to the NARD President, the Ministry of Health has been shifting responsibility for a very long time and the doctors should not be held responsible for any potential escalation of the issue.

He said: “It is unfortunate that the Ministry of Health has been shifting blame and keep saying they don’t have a minister yet, which is why they cannot handle such issues.

“They now have the will and the capacity of implementing imputative measures.

“I can tell you that this letter has aggravated things and nobody should blame NARD for any escalation that might likely happen from next week.”

NARD Says 800 Nigerian Doctors Have Departed In The Last Eight Months

Recall that on July 26, the NARD began an indefinite strike after giving the government a two-week deadline to accede to its demands.

They urge that the one-for-one replacement policy for healthcare professionals be put into effect and that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria stop devaluing membership certificates given out by West African Postgraduate Medical and Surgical Colleges.
