Indications have emerged that the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, is allegedly plotting an impeachment of his deputy, Philip Shaibu.

According to an earlier report by Anaedoonline.ng, Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja has temporarily halted Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State’s attempt to impeach his deputy, Phillip Shaibu, due to their irreconcilable differences.

During his Friday judgement on a request on notice brought by Shaibu, who asked the court to halt his principal’s attempt to ease him out of office, Justice Mohammed imposed the temporary order.

Justice Mohammed ordered the parties to the lawsuit to keep the status quo and to remain in effect until the defendants must provide justification as stated in another ruling of the court made on July 27th, 2023.

The hearing was postponed to August 10 by Justice Mohammed, who also mandated that the IGP, SSS, and Obaseki, who weren’t represented in court, be given notices of the hearing.

In his originating summons, Shaibu asked the court to decide whether Obaseki has the authority to direct the IGP and SSS to harass him and bar him from entering his office to perform his constitutionally guaranteed duties in light of the provisions of sections 186 and 193 of the 1999 Constitution.

He further requested that the court determine whether the governor has the authority to request that impeachment proceedings against him be launched by the Speaker and Chief Judge on grounds other than allegations of misbehaviour, as provided for in section 188 of the 1999 Constitution.

According to SaharaReporter, insider intelligence suggested that the governor’s allies in the state legislature had planned an ambush on Monday, August 7, to try and remove Shaibu from office for disobeying the temporary injunction.

Newsmen learns that the governor’s alleged action is being taken in light of the possibility that the court’s decision to extend the hearing to August 10 may not be in the governor’s favour. As a result, it is his stated intention to start the impeachment process against Shaibu before the hearing date.

Shaibu had applied for protection against potential impeachment and removal from office by his boss, Governor Obaseki, and the state House of Assembly before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The first, second, third, fourth, and fifth defendants in the lawsuit are the Inspector General of Police, State Security Service (also known as Department of State Services), Governor of Edo State, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, and Chief Judge of Edo State, in that order.

This platform reports that after Shaibu was seen in a widely shared video with Senator Adams Oshiomhole during the opening of the National Assembly in Abuja, the relationship between Governor Obaseki and his deputy reportedly deteriorated, according to insiders.

A source further said that the Governor summoned all PDP members of the Edo State House of Assembly to his residence a few days after the Abuja viral video, but left out his deputy, which was highly unusual.
