Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the recently-departed governor of Kano State, expressed his desire for Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to defect to the party in power, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a conversation with a few media outlets yesterday in Kano, Ganduje said Kwankwaso should rejoin the APC now that he is in charge of party operations.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the APC elected Ganduje as the new national chairman of the organisation last week.

At the 12th APC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which took place on Thursday at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, his election was officially recognised.

Speaking, however, during the media chat yesterday, Ganduje said, “Nobody will say Kwankwaso is not a good politician, at least he was a two-term Kano Governor, although, in disrupted tenures, he was Minister of Defence, even though he doesn’t know what defence is, and was once a Senator, even though he never said anything throughout his stay there.

“But, if he is willing to decamp to APC, our door is open, especially now that someone from his state is the party Chairman. It will be easier for him to lobby.”

When questioned why Kwankwaso’s name wasn’t among President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial nominations, Ganduje responded that Kwankwaso himself, not Tinubu, had first learned of the appointment issue.

He said: “It is true that President Tinubu has promised to run a unity government, and he stood by his words. Nyesom Wike, from PDP, is now a Minister nominee. But he [Kwankwaso] is the one who said he would be given appointment initially, and not the President himself.”

Remember that Ganduje served as Kwankwaso’s deputy for two terms, from 1999 to 2003 and from 2011 to 2015.

Additionally, Kwankwaso ran for president in the general election of 2023 on behalf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
