According to report, Nigeria Police Force personnel have been stationed on the Second Niger Bridge to begin a 24-hour surveillance programme to keep it safe from vandals.

The security measure was implemented in response to news from a few weeks earlier that thieves had stolen a few road fittings from the Second Niger Bridge, which had just been opened.

According to a person who spoke to journalists, the missing component was the expansion joint walkway from the bridge’s axis 330.

However, the Anambra Command of the Nigerian Police announced in a statement on Sunday (today) that the bridge is now under 24-hour observation.

The monitoring was conducted in cooperation with the police command in Delta, according to CP Aderemi Adeoye, the commissioner of police for Anambra, who spoke with press in Awka on Sunday.

Adeoye stated that although no one had been detained, there was still being looked into the recent destruction of the bridge.

The patrol, he explained, would be both stationary and mobile, and it had been planned among divisions to cover both day and night observation.

Criminal elements who might want to try their luck once more were advised by the police commissioner to abandon the idea because they will be apprehended and brought before the law.

“We have commenced round-the-clock intensive surveillance on the second Niger bridge, which is a national asset. We are working in collaboration with Delta State Command, which also shares the asset, to achieve comprehensive coverage.

“We are happy that the vandalised parts have been replaced with more fortification, but we want to warn anybody who would wish to attempt another attack on the facility to desist because such a person will be caught. Our surveillance is 24 hours, and it will be more intense at night,” Adeoye said.
