In a recent revelation, a corruption scandal has shaken the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Investigators in the United Kingdom have uncovered startling financial irregularities involving the Managing Director of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Bashir Jamoh. The findings point to various sums, including a staggering N1.5 Trillion and $9,557,312.50 traced to Jamoh’s personal accounts.

The investigation revealed that a Fidelity account (number 4020949836) linked to Bashir Jamoh held N1.5 Trillion. Notably, this account bears the name Hamza Ibrahim Jamoh, along with a different BVN number and a phone number associated with the DG of NIMASA, Jamoh. The N1.5 Trillion was cleared from the account shortly after it was discovered, raising suspicions about the source and purpose of such a massive amount.

Questionable Transactions

The due diligence report on Bashiru Yusuf Jamoh highlighted another alarming transaction: a deposit of $9,557,312.50 into an Access Bank account (number 0710814478) belonging to him. This transaction violated the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy, as the funds were not channeled through the appropriate government channels. The investigation also revealed that Jamoh had set up a company called Talent Expertise Intl. Limited, which received payments from NIMASA, a clear violation of ethical conduct.

The investigation by Global Investigators United Kingdom focused on fraud, money laundering, and breaches of Nigeria’s code of conduct for public officers. The report highlighted numerous financial irregularities, including unauthorized withdrawals and payments made to Jamoh’s personal accounts from government agencies like the Central Bank of Nigeria. The report also raised questions about the use of commercial banks rather than the Treasury Single Account.

In light of these allegations, there are growing calls for Bashir Jamoh’s suspension pending a thorough forensic audit of NIMASA’s financial activities. Additionally, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, may be summoned to explain the reasons behind the large payments made to Jamoh’s account. Recommendations include the prosecution of Bashir Jamoh for financial crimes and money laundering.

A Pattern of Corruption

This revelation follows other corruption scandals involving relatives of President Buhari. Gimba Yau Kumo, a former son-in-law of President Muhammadu Buhari, was recently declared wanted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over an alleged $65 million fraud. These scandals underscore the need for transparency and accountability in the Nigerian government.

While investigations are ongoing, these findings raise significant concerns about financial impropriety within the Buhari administration, threatening the government’s credibility and commitment to fighting corruption.
