For breaking state safety standards, the Lagos State government has closed eight defaulting nightclubs and event venues. Lanre Mojola, the director general of the Lagos State Safety Commission, who made this announcement over the weekend, said it is necessary to seal these facilities in the interest of public safety and to achieve zero workplace and public facility accidents.

When the commission, nightclub owners, and event center owners met in Alausa a little over two months ago, Mojola said, “If you could remember, the commission gave warnings to these operators and warned them to shut clubs allowing the use of narcotics and firearms.

He decried the presence of underaged persons in many nightclubs in the state, saying it is against the law to allow minors at nightclubs. He said club frontages have been turned to drug sales outlets, and mandated the use of proper signages to convey the message of no drugs, no firearms and no underage to club goers.

Mojola admonished nightclub owners and event centre operators to respect the laws of the state, as the government would not hesitate to wield the big stick on those flagrantly violating and disregarding its laws.

Mojola called all recreational and event centres in the state that are yet to register with the state safety commission to do so and obtain the safety compliance certificate.

“In addition, they should provide the fire extinguishers, proper hygiene, housekeeping, use of safety signages at designated areas, while ensuring that adequate parking spaces are provided to curtail traffic gridlock and other safety infractions that can endanger lives and cause inconveniences to members of the public,” he said

He pointed out that enforcement exercises would continue across the state, while the commission would continue to do its best in discharging its duties, especially in ensuring public safety and a safer Lagos for all.
