Concerns have been raised by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) regarding the PEPT’s decision to uphold President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the PEPT dismissed the petitions submitted by Peter Obi, a candidate for the Labour Party, and Atiku Abubakar, a candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party, as being without merit on Wednesday of last week.

Having disagreed with the tribunal’s decision, Obi and Atiku have decided to take the case to the Supreme Court.

The president of the CBCN, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, responded to the controversy surrounding the ruling by asserting that the tribunal’s decision fell short of the people’s reasonable expectations, moral standards, and legal requirements.

The Bishop addressed the crowd on Sunday in Abuja during the Second Plenary Assembly of the Conference’s opening ceremony.

He claimed that the fate of Nigerians continues to “hang in the balance” as a result of Obi and Atiku’s decision to challenge the ruling at the Supreme Court.

In rendering their decision on the petitions, the Supreme Court Judges, he asked, would be just to the parties.

“As this case moves to the next level, the fate of the country continues to hang in the balance and the future of democracy in our land stands on the edge of a precipice.

“We pray and hope that the Supreme Court Judges will neither bend the law nor seek to satisfy the whims and caprices of any party.

“We also pray and hope for a day in our nation when all election results will be finally decided at the polling units and not at the court,” he added.
