In a recent development, the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Umuahia has made significant decisions regarding three members of the House of Representatives, leading to their removal from the National Assembly. The affected lawmakers are Ibe Okwara Osonwa, Emeka Nnamani, and Munachim Alozie, all representing different constituencies under the Labour Party (LP).

The tribunal’s verdict, delivered on Monday, September 11, followed arguments presented by the petitioners, ultimately leading to the removal of the three legislators.

Ibe Okwara Osonwa, who represented the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency under the banner of the LP, was unseated by the tribunal. Justice Adeyinka Adegberegbe, who led the tribunal, ruled in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Daniel Chimezie Okeke. Okeke successfully argued that Osonwa’s election did not comply with the rule of law. Consequently, the tribunal declared Daniel Chimezie Okeke as the rightful winner and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Osonwa and issue a fresh one to Okeke.

Similarly, Emeka Nnamani, the representative of Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, faced a similar fate. The tribunal upheld the petition brought before it by Alex Mascot of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). Mascot raised concerns about Nnamani’s academic qualifications, which prompted the tribunal to declare Alex Mascot as the rightful winner of the constituency.
