Labour Party React Over Jumbo Pay For Tinubu, Ministers, NASS Members

The proposed pay increase for President Bola Tinubu and other public office holders was deemed undesirable and unreasonable by the Labour Party (LP).

According to Anaedoonline.ng, Muhammed Shehu, the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), had stated that the salaries of public servants, judges, and politicians would be raised by 114%.

In an interview with reporters on Sunday, Shehu stated that the review had been delayed because of financial difficulties, noting that President Tinubu receives a salary of less than N1.5 million while ministers make less than N1 million.

The LP Spokesman, Obiora Ifoh, responded to the development by saying that the Commission is proposing to raise the compensation of public officers at a time when the labour union is demanding living wages without a good response.

Ifoh expressed sadness that the Bola Tinubu administration, which was urging Nigerians to adopt austerity measures and urge for patience, was also advocating for increases in the benefits of office for those who occupy political position.

He said: “This is happening at a time when ordinary Nigerians, especially hard-working citizens under the umbrella of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, are demanding living wages without a positive response.

“This is also at a time when the ill-conceived and ill-timed removal of fuel subsidy has increased hardship among ordinary Nigerians.
