Governor Alex Otti of Abia State is embarking on a mission to revitalize the hospitality industry and boost the tourism sector in the state. During a recent meeting with members of the Nigeria Hotel Association and Hotel Proprietors Association in Umuahia, Governor Otti expressed his commitment to developing and strengthening these sectors to meet global standards and stimulate the state’s economy.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Caleb Ajagba, Governor Otti emphasized the importance of partnerships between the government and entrepreneurs in driving the process of reshaping the hospitality industry. He acknowledged that while the government could create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, it was the responsibility of entrepreneurs to take the lead and contribute to wealth creation.

One of the key takeaways from the meeting was the government’s plan to enhance the visibility of Abia’s hospitality industry in the digital space. This initiative aims to promote tourism and showcase the state’s hospitality offerings on a global scale. Additionally, plans are underway to create a website for hotel listing and booking, as well as connecting these establishments to Google Maps. This website will also feature information about Abia’s tourism centers, making it easier for visitors to explore the state.

Dr. Matthew Ekwuruibe, the Commissioner for Digital Economy, highlighted the benefits of leveraging digital technology to reinvent the hospitality industry. Increased visibility, improved ease of doing business, and enhanced customer experiences are just a few of the advantages that digitalization can bring to the sector.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mr. Okey Kanu, emphasized the pivotal role that the hospitality industry plays in driving economic growth. He called for a partnership between the government and hotel owners to transform the sector and elevate Abia’s status as a tourist destination.

Kazie Uko, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, described the meeting as a deliberate effort by the government to transform the hospitality industry in the state. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and industry stakeholders in addressing challenges and fostering growth.

Martins Justice, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Tourism and Entertainment, emphasized that the hospitality industry serves as the foundation of the tourism sector. The government’s vision is to create a hospitality industry that meets the demands of the 21st century while simultaneously developing the tourism sector.

However, challenges such as insecurity, inadequate power supply, and poor road infrastructure have hindered the growth of hotel businesses in Abia. Nnanna Ngwakwe, a member of the Hotel Proprietors Association in Aba, called on the state government to urgently address these issues to promote the advancement of the industry.

As Abia State embarks on this journey to reshape its hospitality and tourism industry, Governor Alex Otti’s administration is poised to create an environment where both visitors and entrepreneurs can thrive, ultimately contributing to the economic development of the state.
