Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State recently made a groundbreaking announcement, declaring free and compulsory education for children from nursery to Junior Secondary School (JSS 3) in public schools across the state. This policy aims to ensure that every child in Anambra has access to quality education without financial barriers.

Governor Soludo expressed his commitment to providing an all-inclusive education system during a visit to Premier Primary School in Obosi, Idemili North Council Area. He emphasized that no child in the state, from nursery to JSS 3, would be required to pay school fees or any other fees to access education.

The governor highlighted the importance of education as an equalizer, allowing children from diverse backgrounds to attend the same schools and compete on an equal footing. This move is expected to break down socio-economic barriers and create a level playing field for all students.

Governor Soludo stated that children of school age would no longer be deprived of access to quality education, emphasizing that education from nursery to JSS is now free and compulsory in Anambra State. The goal is to enhance access to basic education and ensure the full development of children’s personalities, talents, and mental and physical abilities.

Importantly, Governor Soludo made it clear that his administration would not tolerate any non-compliance with this new policy. The free and compulsory education initiative encompasses not only tuition fees but also all other dues and levies that students were previously required to pay each term, which often amounted to significant sums.

The governor stressed that this policy aligns with the constitutional provision that the state must provide free basic education wherever possible. He expressed his administration’s commitment to investing strategically in public education, recognizing that Anambra’s greatest resource is its human capital.

In addition to the free education announcement, Governor Soludo revealed that the state government has significantly reduced tuition fees for Senior Secondary School students (SSS 1 – 3). Previously, fees ranged from 8,000 to 12,000 Naira per term, depending on the school. However, the new flat rate is set at 5,000 Naira for all students, with no additional fees, levies, or dues attached. These fees will be collected by the schools for operational purposes and will not be remitted to the government.
