The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has initiated an indefinite nationwide strike, effective from September 22, 2023, to express its dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to address its demands. Among these demands is the provision of palliatives to mitigate the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies.

This move comes on the heels of a two-day warning strike conducted by the NLC on September 5 and 6, which saw the government failing to meet the union’s demands within the stipulated 14-day ultimatum.

FG Rejects ASUU Demands, Strike Continues

Benson Upah, the Head of the Department for Information and Public Affairs at the NLC, confirmed the commencement of the strike. He emphasized that the government had not made any concessions regarding the union’s demands and stated that the strike could begin at any moment.

Upah further conveyed that this strike would be enforced rigorously, unlike the two-day warning strike, where compliance was not uniformly observed. In his words, “Do you know of any good general who put out his plans in the public before he strikes? We are fully ready to strike.”

The NLC also extended an invitation to the country’s youth to participate in this action. They reiterated that Nigeria belongs to the youth, encouraging them to take a stand and reclaim their nation.

As this nationwide strike unfolds, it is expected to have a significant impact on various sectors of the Nigerian economy, serving as a tangible expression of the NLC’s concerns and demands to the government. The ultimate outcome of this strike will be closely watched by both the public and the government.
