The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is making significant strides towards introducing Computer-Based Testing (CBT) in the administration of its examinations. This development was revealed by the Head of National Office (HNO), Mr. Patrick Areghan, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) as he prepares to conclude his three-year tenure.

Mr. Areghan expressed his vision for the council to adopt CBT as part of its examination process in the near future. He emphasized that although the plans for CBT are in advanced stages, there are challenges to overcome.

One of the challenges, according to Mr. Areghan, is how to conduct CBT for practical and essay papers, which are integral to WAEC examinations. While objective questions can readily be adapted to CBT, practical and essay components present unique challenges. Additionally, not all schools have access to computer facilities, electricity, or computer literacy.

However, Mr. Areghan stressed the importance of embracing technology. He envisions a phased approach, starting with objective questions in a CBT format while allowing schools without the necessary infrastructure to continue with the traditional pencil-and-paper mode.

Progress Amidst Constraints:

Despite these challenges, Mr. Areghan highlighted the council’s commitment to introducing CBT for its examinations, aiming to digitalize every aspect of WAEC operations. He mentioned that almost every section of the council has been digitalized during his tenure.

Mr. Areghan’s vision extends beyond CBT; he aspires to see WAEC become more visible on the international stage. He hopes to facilitate the administration of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Nigerian students living abroad. Additionally, he aims to expand the digital certificate system launched in Nigeria to the entire sub-region.

One of Mr. Areghan’s notable achievements during his tenure is the establishment of the council’s Digital Security Printing Press, a significant milestone after 71 years of WAEC’s existence. This achievement, along with others like the Staff Bus scheme to assist employees with high transportation costs, marks his legacy.

However, Mr. Areghan considers the successful conduct of examinations, the timely release of results, and the issuance of certificates to deserving candidates as his greatest achievements. He emphasized that conducting examinations, especially during challenging periods like the COVID-19 pandemic, is the cornerstone of WAEC’s mission.
