INEC Announces Dates for Edo and Ondo State Governorship Elections in 2024

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the dates for the highly anticipated governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states in 2024. According to INEC, the Edo State governorship election is scheduled to take place on September 21, 2024, while the Ondo State governorship election will be held on November 16, 2024.

These dates were determined in accordance with the provisions of Section 178(2) of the Nigerian Constitution, 1999 (as amended), which stipulates that governorship elections should be conducted not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the tenure of the last holder of the office. Additionally, Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 requires INEC to publish a Notice for the Election no later than 360 days before the date of the election.

The tenure of the current governors of Edo and Ondo states is set to conclude on November 11, 2024, and February 23, 2025, respectively, which aligns with the election timelines provided by INEC.

For the Edo State Election:

– Party primaries will take place from February 1 to February 24, 2024.
– Submission of the list of nominated candidates via the online portal will begin on March 4, 2024, and conclude at 6:00 p.m. on March 24, 2024.
– The final list of candidates will be published on April 23, 2024.
– Political parties can commence public campaigns on April 24, 2024, and must conclude 24 hours before the election day on September 19, 2024.

For the Ondo State Election:

– Party primaries are scheduled to occur from April 6 to April 27, 2024.
– Submission of the list of nominated candidates through the online portal will begin at 9:00 a.m. on April 29, 2024, and close at 6:00 p.m. on May 20, 2024.
– The final list of candidates will be made public on June 18, 2024.
– Political parties can commence public campaigns on June 19, 2024, and must conclude 24 hours before the election day on November 14, 2024.

INEC emphasized that detailed information about these elections will be published and made readily available on the INEC website and through its various social media platforms.
