According to Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, the sum of N771 million naira was divided among property, store, and business owners to allow for the extension of Okpara Square Ossah road.

He claimed that as the government started work on the 3.5-kilometer road project that was given to the Craneburg Construction Company, no less than 130 buildings were designated for demolition.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the private company was given the go-ahead last Wednesday by the Abia State government to widen the Ossah road from four to six lanes.

Saturday in Umuahia, the state capital, during a media edition of his monthly media discussion with locals, Otti emphasised that the decision to widen the road to six lanes was made to maximise the state’s economic potential of the state capital as well as open up the city to greater economic opportunities.

In addition to the eleven roads that have previously been granted and the three that have been commissioned since the beginning of his administration, the governor noted that three further roads have been given to contractors in Aba, the state’s commercial centre.

He said, “Penco Avenue, Omuma Road and another around Clifford Road, resources are scarce, Port Harcourt road is not forgotten, the road requires a lot of design, and in the next few weeks you will see what will happen.

“With the little resources the state gets, our government will improve on infrastructure as much as we can, and our people will continue to see the changes in the coming weeks.

Governor Alex Otti’s Vision to Transform Abia’s Hospitality and Tourism Industry

“Our government is making efforts to ensure that our people have adequate security with the procurement of Hilux vehicles and engagement of various security agencies in the team code-named “Operation Flush.”

He noted that while locals are smarter now, based on what his administration has provided over the previous four months, he welcomed criticism from the opposition political parties.

Speaking of accountability, the governor stated that, as opposed to believing the rumoured 500 billion naira that is said to have accrued to the state from the federal government in two months, journalists can have access to any information they desire regarding the allocation that comes into the state and the amount paid for any contract given.

He added: “There’s no problem with transparency, the information is in the public domain. I cannot stay here and throw figures in the air, there’s nothing we are doing here that is hidden. If such money comes in, what did they (the previous administration) do with the money?”

While noting that the administration is “taking things one step at a time to provide good health services for the people,” the governor insisted that the Aba Specialist Hospital is not being abandoned.

Otti claims that while local government elections would be held in the state, Transition Committee Chairmen will be chosen to handle operational matters up until the election.

“The transition committee will lead before the local government election is held, we don’t have the timetable yet,” Otti said.

He said the security vote will be used on what it is meant for and will not be allowed to be used for other purposes.

“It is all about deploring money to work for Abia people, gone are the days when monies are shared. We now have the Abia State Orientation Agency and the whole idea is for people to begin to think and see life differently. People have been used to doing things the wrong way in Abia,” he added.
