Elon Musk’s satellite company, Starlink, has forged a strategic partnership with the e-commerce giant, Jumia Technologies AG, to extend its satellite broadband services across the African continent. This collaboration aims to bring high-speed internet connectivity to underserved areas in Africa, starting with Nigeria.

Hisham El Gabry, Chief Commercial Officer at Jumia, revealed in an interview that the e-commerce firm will soon offer Starlink’s satellite terminals and related kits to customers in select African nations. The initial rollout will begin in Nigeria, with plans to expand to Kenya and other regions in the future.

El Gabry expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting Starlink’s successful endeavors in Southeast Asia and South America. He emphasized that this collaboration would provide Africans with access to fast and reliable internet services, bridging the digital divide.

The plan is to make Starlink’s satellite terminals available for purchase through Jumia’s online platforms and network of agents in Nigeria, with Kenya following suit shortly after. This move is expected to address the challenge of providing internet connectivity to areas that lack formal addresses and comprehensive city mapping.

Nigeria holds the distinction of being the first African country to receive Starlink services, marking a significant milestone in efforts to expand internet access across the continent. Starlink, an initiative by Musk’s SpaceX, is designed to enhance global internet coverage, particularly in remote and underserved regions.

One of the key advantages of Starlink’s satellite network is its proximity to Earth. Starlink satellites orbit at a significantly lower altitude compared to traditional satellites, resulting in lower latency and the ability to support services that were previously unattainable with conventional satellite internet.
