The Senate Committee on Gas, led by Senator Jarigbe Jarigbe, has called on President Bola Tinubu to swiftly present a 2023 Supplementary Budget to the National Assembly to initiate his ambitious Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) project.

This request comes shortly after President Tinubu’s announcement of measures to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians, demonstrating a commitment to addressing energy and transportation challenges in the country.

The lawmakers, while acknowledging the importance of the CNG initiative in providing more affordable and environmentally friendly transportation options, emphasized the necessity of adhering to established budgetary processes. They stressed that extra-budgetary spending is contrary to the law and insisted on the need for parliamentary approval for expenditures, especially for projects in the gas value chain.

Senator Jarigbe, the committee chairman, expressed his appreciation for President Tinubu’s CNG revolution, recognizing its potential to ease the burden on citizens. However, he cautioned against spending taxpayers’ money without the National Assembly’s approval, emphasizing the importance of fiscal responsibility and adherence to the law.

The senators also discouraged extra-budgetary expenditure through “Ways and Means,” a practice that has been a topic of debate and contention in the Central Bank of Nigeria. They reiterated the legislature’s readiness to support initiatives that benefit the people and urged President Tinubu to submit a supplementary budget for 2023, which aligns with the legal framework.

In his Independence Day speech, President Tinubu outlined his commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians by addressing issues like hunger, poverty, and hardship. He highlighted the introduction of CNG buses as a cost-effective and safe public transportation solution, which would positively impact transport fares.

President Tinubu also mentioned plans to introduce CNG conversion kits and establish training facilities and workshops across the nation to provide new opportunities for transport operators and entrepreneurs.
