UPDATE: Arms Sold in Onitsha markets – Anambra CP, Aderemi Adeoye

Aderemi Adeoye, the commissioner of police for Anambra State, has made hints that firearms being sold in that state’s Onitsha Main Market.

Adeoye stated this on Monday during a press conference at the Police Command Headquarters in Amawbia, in the state’s Awka South Local Government Area.

The CP, who claimed to be speaking from extensive service in the state dating back to the 1990s, claimed that recent years had seen an even worsening of the situation.

One of the places where guns are being produced in the state, according to him, is the main market in Onitsha.

The CP also claimed that blacksmiths in Awka produce local firearms, aiding in the spread of illegal weapons.

He declared that the command would pursue and prosecute such arm makers.

The Commissioner added that illegal weaponry were also being transported from Cameroon to the South-East via Port Harcourt.

According to him, the distributors would bundle these guns with stockfish and deliver them to a location close to Aba, Abia State, for eager purchasers.

He said that in just three months, the leadership had captured 30 militants and recovered 26 weapons.

He reiterated the grace period established by the Inspector General of Police for owners of illicit firearms to give them in to the authorities, noting that during this time, no one would face punishment or legal action for turning in such weapons.

Adeoye , however warned, that “After this grace period we shall began search and recovery of such firearms the way that has not happened in this part of the world and culprits prosecuted appropriately.”
