In a bid to tackle the issues of cross-border banditry and the menace of one-chance robbers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has taken significant steps. These criminals, often posing as staff drivers, pick up unsuspecting passengers and rob them, sometimes resorting to violence, and in extreme cases, even taking lives.

The Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command, Haruna Garba, revealed these initiatives following a meeting of the FCT Security Council, presided over by Minister Wike. The meeting aimed to discuss strategies to eliminate criminal elements within the FCT and address the growing challenges of cross-border crimes and one-chance robberies.

As a result of these discussions, two joint task forces have been established, comprising all security agencies operating in the FCT. One task force is specifically focused on addressing the one-chance robbery issue, while the other is dedicated to combatting cross-border crimes, including armed robbery and kidnapping. These security operations have already commenced, reflecting the government’s commitment to eradicating criminal activities in the FCT.

When questioned about the recent security operations targeting mechanic workshops in the territory, Commissioner Garba clarified that these actions were based on intelligence. He emphasized that the FCT is the heart of the country, attracting a diverse population, including individuals with no legitimate business in the region. Some of these individuals resort to living in precarious conditions, such as under bridges and in mechanic workshops.

The purpose of these raids, according to Garba, is to remove potential criminal elements from such areas, ensuring that FCT residents can live in safety and security. The government’s objective is to create an environment where people can go about their daily lives without fear, fostering a sense of well-being and stability within the capital city.
