The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that in 2022, a total of N1.93 trillion was generated as Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) across all 36 states in Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The top-performing states in IGR were Lagos, Rivers, and the FCT, with N651.2 billion, N172.8 billion, and N124.4 billion, respectively. On the other hand, the states with the lowest IGR were Kebbi, Taraba, and Yobe, bringing in N9.1 billion, N10.2 billion, and N10.5 billion, respectively.

NBS pointed out that various types of taxes contributed to this revenue, including pay-as-you-earn (PAYE), direct assessment, road taxes, stamp duties, capital gain tax, withholding taxes, other taxes, and Local Government Areas (LGAs) revenue. PAYE was the most significant contributor, accounting for 67.62% of the total tax revenue generated across the country. In contrast, capital gains tax made up the smallest portion at 0.24%.
