The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared that it will commence protests in Imo State starting from November 1, 2023. This decision comes in response to alleged violations and abuses of workers’ rights and privileges by the Imo State government.
Joe Ajaero, the President of NLC, expressed deep concerns over the continuous and egregious violations of workers’ rights and privileges in Imo State. Despite repeated attempts to engage in constructive dialogues and reach amicable agreements, the state government has repeatedly broken these agreements, leaving workers’ rights trampled upon.
As a result, the NLC is left with no choice but to initiate mass protests and industrial actions to demonstrate their outrage and put a stop to the ongoing violation of workers’ rights in the state.
The NLC president highlighted several issues contributing to this decision, including the government’s failure to implement previous agreements, unpaid salary arrears of up to 20 months, unjust labeling of workers as “ghost workers,” the vandalization of the NLC State Secretariat, implementation of discriminatory pay, unsettled gratuity arrears, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage, among others.

Ajaero called on all stakeholders, including civil society organizations, to stand in solidarity with the workers of Imo State and implored the state government to honor its obligations and respect workers’ rights and privileges.
The NLC emphasized its readiness for industrial peace in the state but made it clear that the choice ultimately rests in the hands of the Imo State government. They also issued a warning, stating that they would hold the Governor accountable if any harm befalls a worker or trade union leader during the lawful protests.
This decision by the NLC underscores the importance of upholding workers’ rights and ensuring fair labor practices in Nigeria. The protests and industrial actions serve as a means to demand justice and accountability for the workers of Imo State.
