A group of passionate youths gathered in Lagos to protest against the purchase of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) for lawmakers in the National Assembly. The protesters, who gathered in Ikeja, Lagos, held placards with slogans such as ‘Fund education not SUVs,’ ‘Pay a living wage not SUVs,’ and ‘Fund hospitals not SUVs,’ among others.
The protesters believe that lawmakers purchasing SUVs with public funds is insensitive, especially when a significant portion of the population is struggling. One of the protesters, Juwon Sanyaolu, expressed concerns about the living wage for workers, noting that the N33,000 minimum wage is not sustainable, while lawmakers receive expensive vehicles worth around N160 billion. He highlighted the challenges faced by students who are dropping out of school due to high fees, emphasizing the insensitivity of such expenditures.
The purchase of SUVs for lawmakers has sparked criticism among the Nigerian populace. Reports suggest that lawmakers in both the Green and Red Chambers of the National Assembly are receiving these vehicles. Social Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sought a court injunction to halt the delivery of SUVs to lawmakers until legal proceedings are completed.
