Despite the initial criticism from the Labour Party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, lawmakers from the party in the National Assembly have decided to accept the Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) worth N160 million each, which were purchased for federal legislators.

Abure had advised against accepting these luxury vehicles, deeming it insensitive. However, some Labor Party lawmakers have defended their intent to accept the SUVs, emphasizing their importance in fulfilling their legislative duties.

They argue that these vehicles are essential for tasks such as oversight functions and visiting constituents, especially in challenging areas. Ngozi Okolie, a Labour Party lawmaker from Delta Aniocha North and South, highlighted the necessity of these vehicles as work tools for lawmakers. She also pointed out that state-level politicians receive more benefits than federal legislators, making official vehicles essential.

Stainless Nwodo, a Labour Party lawmaker representing Igbo Etiti and Uzo-Uwani constituencies in Enugu State, expressed his appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the official vehicles. Nwodo believes that the SUVs will benefit constituents and facilitate visits to areas with challenging accessibility.

However, Neda Imasuen, the lawmaker representing Edo South Senatorial District, has decided to wait until the vehicles arrive before making a final decision on whether to accept them.
