JUST IN: NLC, TUC Calls Emergency NEC Meeting

An emergency joint extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting is scheduled for today by 7 p.m., organised by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

According to Anaedoonline.ng, this comes after organised labour and Nuhu Ribadu, the national security adviser, met.

Tommy Etim, the TUC’s national vice president, revealed the emergency meeting in an Abuja interview with Newsmen.

UPDATE: FG To Meet Leaders of NLC And TUC Over Strike

According to Etim, the NSA briefed the organised labour leadership on the actions made thus far.

He added that the union leaders had gotten the NSA to commit.

According to Etim, the union officials were happy with the NSA’s initial actions.

He said: “We commend the steps taken so far by the NSA. He made us understand that he didn’t see the issue on the ground as a political fight. He also noted that two people have been arrested in line with the brutalisation of Ajaero. Initially, the government felt the strike would not hold. They were shocked to see that we went ahead with our threats.

“We are going to have an extraordinary joint NEC this evening by 7pm and I can tell you there is hope.”

NSA Condemns Attack on NLC President, Urges Labour to Halt Strike

Recall that earlier in the day, Ribadu had a meeting with the organised labour leadership in his Abuja office.

The people behind Ajaero’s abuse had been apprehended, according to an NSA announcement.

Remember that on Tuesday, the NLC and TUC announced an indefinite nationwide strike in protest of the November 1 attack on Joe Ajaero, the president of the NLC, and other labour leaders in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

Additional complaints made by Organised Labour include unpaid salary arrears, the unfair designation of 11,000 workers as ghost employees, unpaid gratuities, disregard for the N30,000 minimum wage law, and the designation of 10,000 retirees as ghost workers.
