Mr. Mathias Ezeaku, a traditional preacher, was taken into custody by Anambra State Police Command agents in Nkpor, which is close to Onitsha.

Ezeaku has been sceptical of Christianity and runs what he describes as a traditional worship centre. He has been calling numerous well-known preachers fraudulent and criticising them.

When the preacher came at his worship centre on Sunday morning, men dressed in police uniforms took him into custody.

The operatives fired several shots after the event. A bullet struck one of the center’s members in the leg.

In an early Sunday morning post, Ezeaku encouraged his followers to join him for worship on Facebook. The message said, “Don’t forget to join us today as we adore and uplift the name of our ancestors and creator Chukwuokikeabiama.”

“Time is 9am at Amafor Town Hall Nkpor opposite New Type Market Enugu Onitsha Expressway.”

Marching to the Police Annex in Awkuzu to protest Ezeaku’s arrest, certain centre members were able to identify some of the operation’s participants. They protested the arrest, claiming that the agents were unable to produce an arrest order or even provide a valid form of identification.

In the meantime, the preacher’s detention has not been disclosed by the Anambra State Police Command.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, a spokesman for the Police Command, said the Daily Post that he was not aware of the arrest. But he assured our correspondent that he would follow up as soon as it was verified.
