Edozie Njoku, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has announced that Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), will be charged with contempt of court and sent in jail for four days.

During a Friday press conference, he stated this.

Njoku claimed that an order recognising him as the National Chairman had already been issued by the court.

The Chairman emphasised the need for Nigerians to stand by the judiciary in order to defend it against those who would undermine justice and damage its reputation.

He said that on November 9, 2023, Mahmood received a 14-day ultimatum from FCT High Court 40 (Suit No.: FCT/HC/CV/4068/2023) to acknowledge him as the National Chairman of APGA or face jail time. Chief Victor Oye had taken Mahmood to the court in November 2022 on a criminal charge, claiming that he had forged a Supreme Court Judgement. He was then placed under remand at the Suleja Prison for two days.

“Today is November 24, 2023,” he declared. That means, November 29, 2023, the postponed date for Mahmood’s jail sentence, is five days away.

“By its judgment, the Court found Mahmood and Oye culpable, but out of leniency gave them a 14-day window to purge themselves or prepare for jail.

“Rather than do the needful, INEC, led by Yakubu Mahmood in collaboration with Oye, headed to the Appeal Court, boasting that they have procured enough judges to ensure that the contempt charge dangling over their heads ends up as an exercise in futility.

“However, there are far-reaching implications to INEC’s posturing and grandstanding. It signals an internment to competent court orders in Nigeria.

“INEC, led by Mahmood, simply wants to prove to the world that it has immunity,” he concluded.
