The Federal Capital Territory Administration’s (FCTA) Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat has announced plans to crack down on unauthorised abattoirs in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in an effort to maintain meat handling standards and protect public health.

This pledge was made by Mandate Secretary Lawan Geidam to representatives of the FCT Butchers Association at an Abuja meeting.

Mr. Geidam raised concerns regarding the safety of meat that the general public consumes and underlined the need to make sure that abattoirs in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) follow basic standards.

He said that in order to lessen the possible risks caused by unlicensed abattoirs, the Veterinary Services Department is aggressively monitoring and enforcing compliance with operational criteria under the FCTA.

Geidam stated, “Our objective is in line with the statutory mandate of the secretariat, which is to ensure that abattoirs in the FCT are not only duly registered and certified but also up to standard for the good of public health.”

He gave the butchers assurances of the secretariat’s dedication to tackling the different issues impacting the sub-sector.

He claims that the government is working to provide effective waste management in the slaughterhouses and to supply water.

He continued by saying that the administration was wrapping up preparations to build bio-gas stations as a safer substitute for the dangerous technique of using tyres in the processing of animal skins.

“We will not ignore the significant issues facing our abattoirs, including the need for potable water and regular waste disposal.

“I assure you that the present leadership of the FCT Administration is working hard to maintain standards in service delivery across all sectors in the FCT.

“The secretariat will intensify its daily meat inspection activities at the various abattoirs to ensure that no animal is slaughtered without being certified safe by the veterinary doctors,” he emphasized.
