Building owners on Orchid Road, Agungi, Ajiran, Conservation Road, Osapa, and other roads along the Ikota River have received a seven-day notice of violation from the Lagos State Government.

Following a thorough inspection trip of System 156 and 157 Channel along Ikota River, the development was announced by Special Adviser for Environment Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu and Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab.

In order to prevent property destruction, they implored Lagosians to adhere to the state’s Drainage Master Plan.

Wahab claimed that once the state’s notifications expired, there was no turning back its determination to execute the law and reclaim drainage setbacks.

The purpose of the inspection tour was to find out how compliant property owners who had been offered the option to comply voluntarily with the approved seven-meter setback on both sides of the channel with regard to buildings and fences were.

Wahab revealed that the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) had previously complained about many distortions in a written petition, claiming that numerous distortions had occurred on their roadways.

“We cannot keep lampooning the government for flooding when developers, builders and residents themselves are the main cause of flooding; we shall continue to enforce because that is why laws are made. Without law and order, there cannot be development, this level of bad behaviour must stop,” he said.
