Prof. Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, declared that 160,000 Boko Haram militants had turned to Islam.

The governor underlined the benefits of ongoing military operations during a courtesy call by Defence Minister Muhammadu Abubakar and his delegation, saying, “About 160,000 Boko Haram (insurgents) have so far repented.” This would not have been feasible if the military had not been relentlessly attacking them.

Although there is still a threat from Boko Haram, Governor Zulum said that it is not as great as it once was. Declaring, “In general, the security situation in Borno State has tremendously improved,” he emphasised the state’s improved security status.

Concerned about problems in the region, especially in the Lake Chad basin, Zulum called for action to limit the spread of light weapons. “The only way we can degrade the insurgents and clear the Chad Basin of insurgency is by upscaling and continuous military operations,” he said, emphasising the necessity to stop insurgents from finding safe havens.

Along with other important authorities, Defence Minister Muhammadu Abubakar travelled to Borno State to evaluate the state of the counterterrorism campaign. In releasing information about the terror war, Zulum emphasised the need for prudence, adding, “We have to be very careful about the way we disseminate the terror war information.”

To guarantee long-lasting progress in the war against terrorism, the governor called for persistent efforts.
