While Nigerians were suffering from multifaceted poverty and Bola Tinubu was spending millions of dollars to fly 1,411 overly busy delegates to Dubai for COP28, Robert Habeck, Germany’s vice chancellor and minister of economy and climate change, cancelled his planned trip to the climate change conference because of the pressing need to address the country’s budget crisis.
He was scheduled to attend the Tuesday’s COP28 summit, but after speaking with Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who asked him to come, he chose to remain in Berlin.
A recent decision by Germany’s Constitutional Court invalidating the government’s intention to utilise €60 billion ($65 billion) in borrowed funds for climate projects set off the budget crisis.

The court ruled that the funds, which were first set aside for the coronavirus epidemic, could not be changed without the consent of parliament.
The three-party coalition government led by Mr. Scholz is under tremendous pressure to approve a new budget for 2024 by the end of the year due to the verdict.
The Free Democrats (FDP), the Greens, and the Social Democrats (SPD) make up the coalition.
Right now, Mr. Scholz, Mr. Habeck, and Finance Minister Christian Lindner are in charge of the budget talks.
By Wednesday, they must come to a political consensus in order for the Cabinet to adopt the budget and send it to Parliament for more discussion.
In an interview with Germany’s ARD television channel on Sunday, Mr. Habeck expressed optimism about the state of the negotiations.
