Of the 1,411 Nigerians attending the ongoing COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 422 were financially supported by the Federal Government, according to Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris.

Idris revealed this in a statement on Monday, according to Anaedoonline.ng, in response to the uproar that erupted when it was revealed that Nigeria had one of the largest delegations at the conference despite the nation’s escalating rates of hunger and poverty.

According to the government, the Nigerian delegation consists of several individuals, including government officials, representatives from various state governments, the media, international institutions, civil society, the voluntary sector, and marginalised community members.

“The Federal Government-funded delegation is made up of a total of 422 persons, as follows:

National Council on Climate Change = 32

“Federal Ministry of Environment = 34

“As the biggest economy and most populous country in Africa, with a substantial extractive economy and extensive vulnerability to climate change, Nigeria has a significant stake in climate action, and our active and robust participation at COP is therefore not unwarranted.”
