Obol Okoi Obono-Obla, a former presidential adviser to former President Muhammadu Buhari, has advocated for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to unite with the Labour Party (LP) and other parties to form a significant opposition in the nation.

The veteran member of the ruling party, Obono-Obla, issued a statement in which he expressed his approval of Atiku Abubakar’s call, the PDP’s nominee for president in the most recent general election.

He said, “I fervently welcome the call by the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, for the merger of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) and other motley political parties into a single political party to fight the All Progressives Congress (APC). That is a step in the right direction.”

Obono-Obla stated that the appeal is in line with his earlier appeal for Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the LP’s presidential candidate, to unite their political forces instead of wasting further time pouting and complaining about their loss in the general elections on February 25, 2023.

The APC has become enormous, in Obono-Obla’s opinion, and he does not see it being “defeated by fragmented and poorly organised PDP, LP, SDP and NNPP in the next election…”

According to him, the APC has strayed from its fundamental doctrine, scope, and viewpoint.

He claimed that the APC’s progressive credentials have been obscured by its mash-up of disparate political beliefs, philosophies, and odd political adherents.

“The merger of these opposition political parties would undoubtedly make the leadership of APC sit up.

“Presently, there is a lot of rumbling within the APC over the nonchalant way the leadership has been treating its dedicated and committed membership.

“APC has elevated and indeed institutionalised political prostitution and opportunism to the highest level ever seen in the political history of Nigeria.”

The activist charged that the ruling party consistently favours specific new members above its own devoted, loyal, and committed membership when awarding tickets.

Additionally, he has said that the party is selecting Ministers from among those who joined the party less than two years prior to an election, rather than those who have been members since 2010 and have given their all to the party.

He thinks that the union of these political parties will help the APC undergo change and foster the growth of a new democratic culture in the nation.
