Prof Ijeoma Ukaegbu Becomes The Seventh President of Cambridge University

Professor Ijeoma Uchegbu, a renowned authority on Pharmaceutical Nanoscience, will become the seventh person to lead Wolfson College out of the university’s thirty-one colleges, when she takes on this role in the coming year.

The formal announcement was made public on the university website under the heading “Wolfson Elects Professor Ijeoma Uchegbu as the College’s 7th President.” Professor Uchegbu is scheduled to take over as President on October 1, 2024, replacing Professor Jane Clarke.

Renowned for her innovative work in the field of nanoparticle medication delivery, Professor Uchegbu is currently a professor at University College London. Her research, especially in the area of drug transport processes, has produced ground-breaking medicines to combat the opioid crisis, like the enkephalin painkiller contender Enveltaå.

The statement emphasises Professor Uchegbu’s many honours, prizes, and fellowships in addition to her active participation on academic boards and councils, such as the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Wellcome Trust. She is also a Royal Society of Chemistry honorary fellow.

Professor Uchegbu offers a plethora of expertise to her new position having held senior positions at UCL, such as Pro Vice Provost for Africa and the Middle East and Provost’s Envoy for Racial Equality.

She responded to the news by expressing her excitement about becoming the helm of Wolfson College and characterising it as an aspirational and progressive establishment. She is excited to work in tandem with the faculty, staff, and students to help them reach their goals and fulfil their potential.

Professor Jane Clarke, the current president, congratulated Professor Uchegbu and expressed her belief that heading the “Wolfpack” will be a fulfilling experience.

Professor Uchegbu graduated from the University of Benin in 1981 after studying pharmacy. She is originally from South East Nigeria and Hackney. In 1997, she completed her doctoral studies in the UK under the guidance of Alexander (Sandy) Florence, the dean of the pharmacy school.

She also worked as a lecturer at the University of Strathclyde from 2002 to 2004 as part of her academic career.
