A petition seeking an order for the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to look into and punish Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party, for allegedly violating asset declaration regulations, was denied by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Olukoya Ogungbeje, a self-described human rights activist, filed the lawsuit, alleging that Obi’s asset declaration was incomplete.

Obi was charged by Ogungbeje with failing to disclose offshore interests, using foreign accounts while holding public office, and holding a directorship in a UK firm for a period of 14 months following his appointment as governor of Anambra State.

The Nigerian Constitution and the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act were allegedly violated by these accusations.

Although Ogungbeje and his attorney were not present at the most recent hearing on Tuesday, the court had originally given Ogungbeje permission to submit an application for an order of mandamus against the CCB in November. As a result, the lawsuit was dismissed by Justice Inyang Ekwo for inadequate prosecution.

Ogungbeje alleges that the CCB failed to act on his complaint, committing “crass dereliction of public duty.” The CCB has not responded to his allegations in public.
