The “Peace Resolutions” that were formalised as a result of Bola Tinubu’s peace conference to address the current issue in Rivers State have drawn criticism from the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum. They have concerns that the resolutions’ contents go against certain parts of the constitution.

As instructed by Tinubu after an emergency meeting on Tuesday, Rufus Ada George, a former governor of Rivers State and Chairman of the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum, expressed these opinions on behalf of the Forum in response to the “Peace Resolutions” reached between Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the Minister of the F.C.T. Nyesom Wike, Martins Amaewhule, and others.

Although they welcome Tinubu’s intervention, the elders disagree with the orders, stating that only a higher court has the power to overturn a court order and that no one may determine where a House of Assembly meeting should take place.

“The directives contravene the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which Tinubu swore to uphold at all times. The directives unilaterally suspended the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in an attempt to reverse a court order recognizing Rt. Honourable Edison Ehie as the speaker and directing that the remainder of members of the House of Assembly constituted the quorum for legislative business,” Ada George stated.

Ada George expressed sorrow that the chief defender of the constitution appears to be content to ignore it. The venerable statesman, who presided over the state as governor during the third republic, underscored the legal argument by referring to a ruling by the Rivers State High Court, which held that the defection of Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule and his group, who are no longer members of the state House of Assembly, precludes their reinstatement and payment through unofficial means.

Reactions to the Monday peace treaty that Governor Fubara and Wike signed at the Presidential Villa are still coming in. The six points of agreement in the text, dubbed the Peace Resolution, were signed by Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Advisor (NSA), and other individuals.

At a public event on Tuesday, Governor Fubara thanked the people of Rivers for their support during the crisis and said, “There is no price too big to pay for peace.”
