In the conflict between Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, organised labour has thrown its support behind the former.

To express their support for Fubara, the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Trade Union Congress, TUC, National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Labour Centres, ITC, Traders, and other groups gathered in Port Harcourt’s streets.

Wike and Fubara were at odds over Rivers State’s political system, which caused a rift.

Following threats of Fubara’s impeachment, 27 Rivers State House of Assembly members who supported Wike defected to the All Progressives Congress, or APC.

The two engaged in a power struggle that resulted in the resignation of approximately seven commissioners.

President Bola Tinubu issued an eight-point resolution and forced Wike and Fubara to sign a peace accord in an attempt to end the crisis.

The state Assembly retracted their notice of Fubara’s impeachment after Tinubu intervened.
