Former Governor Dave Umahi’s younger brother, Chief Austin Umahi, has formally declared his candidature for the next Ebonyi South Senatorial byelection, scheduled for February 2024.

After Dave Umahi was named a minister in Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, a vacancy resulted.

At a press conference in Abakaliki on Monday, Austin brashly introduced himself as the front-runner in the contest. In order to select a deserving senator for the district, he underlined the significance of an authentic democratic process.

“I am committed to providing the best representation for the people, drawing on my extensive experiences in both business and politics,” he stated.

Austin, who has a career in both business and politics, most notably served as the APC’s director general for the 2023 gubernatorial campaign.

“I am a mere instrument in God’s hands, and I believe He has more plans for me,” he said, expressing his dependence on divine guidance.

When asked about zoning, Austin stated that his Ohaozara Local Government Area is the legitimate recipient of the senate seat, as per the ruling of the APC’s Ebonyi Zoning Committee.

“I am not pursuing personal gains but advocating for the people,” he affirmed, urging a transparent election process that allows voters to choose their representative from a diverse pool of candidates.
