President Tinubu Attends Inauguration Amid Kidnapping Crisis

Kidnapping Crisis Heightens Concerns in Nigeria as President Tinubu Addresses Inauguration Amidst National Turmoil

January 16, 2024

Amid a pervasive kidnapping and terrorism crisis gripping Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu’s presence at the second-term inauguration ceremony of Governor Hope Uzodinma sparked discontent among Nigerians. The nation, grappling with an alarming surge in abductions and violence, expected the president to address the pressing issue during his speech. However, to the disappointment of many, no mention of the rampant kidnappings was made.

Nigeria has recently witnessed a surge in high-profile kidnapping cases, causing widespread fear and anguish. Among the distressing incidents is the abduction of Folashade Ariyo, her mother, and three sisters in the FCT by kidnappers. Demanding a ransom of 60 million initially, the kidnappers later raised the stakes, demanding an additional 100 million. Tragically, Folashade was murdered, and her body was dumped along Kaduna road, leaving the wife and children still in captivity.

The kidnapping of the Federal University Gusau (FUGus) girls, Nabeeha and her sisters, along with the abduction of 8 NYSC members on their way to camp, further highlights the precarious security situation in the country. Expressways that were once considered safe for travel have become perilous, contributing to heightened anxiety among Nigerians.

The public outcry underscores the growing frustration with the perceived inaction and silence of the government regarding the kidnapping epidemic. Concerns have been amplified by the seeming lack of a comprehensive strategy to address the crisis. Nigerians have lamented that if such incidents occurred in other countries, swift and decisive action by the military and security agencies would follow.

The modus operandi of these criminals involves demanding ransoms, with victims often left in captivity for prolonged periods. Disturbingly, citizens have criticized the government for its failure to trace the phone lines used by kidnappers or take proactive measures to address the crisis.

The pervasive insecurity in Nigeria, coupled with what some perceive as governmental negligence and indifference, has raised concerns about the nation’s stability. Many citizens fear that the breaking point may be near, with potential repercussions manifesting in widespread unrest or, as some suggest, even a revolution.

As the nation grapples with these profound challenges, Nigerians are calling for a government that prioritizes the safety and security of its citizens over political considerations. The need for a comprehensive and proactive approach to combat kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism has never been more pressing, as the resilience of the Nigerian people approaches its limit.
