At the Young Lawyers Forum leadership event in Abuja, Nigeria’s Interior Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed that people from Chad, Cameroon, and Niger have been found to be in possession of Nigerian passports.

The primary concern at this time, he underlined, is not availability. The goal is to stop people from obtaining Nigerian passports who have no business doing so. We observe Nigerian passports being held by Chad, Cameroon, and Nigeriens.

Tunji-Ojo responded to this by declaring that in order to stop such illicit acts, a new verification procedure would be implemented for passport acquisition.

He also emphasised the work being done by the Nigerian Immigration Service to protect the country’s borders, which it shares with four other nations, two of which are members of ECOWAS.

He stated, “The security of the border is directly proportional to the security of a nation. There must be control over who comes in and who leaves our borders. This responsibility is the exclusive right of the Nigerian Immigration Service to safeguard our borders.”

Additionally, Tunji-Ojo stated that a backlog of 2.4 million national identity cards has been effectively cleared by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). “At NIMC, we were able to clear 2.4 million backlogs we encountered on the ground,” he stated.
