The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has expressed regret over the country’s pervasive economic suffering, claiming that many households are currently fighting just to make ends meet on a daily basis.

In a statement released in Abuja on Sunday and signed by the Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, and President-General, Muhammad Abubakar, the NSCIA emphasised the negative impact that economic hardships have on the public, especially in light of the recent struggles with terrorism and insecurity.

The severity of Nigeria’s current economic condition was further highlighted by the council, which focused on the negative impact of the elimination of the petrol subsidy on Nigerians.

The statement read, “The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) is deeply concerned about the current economic reality in Nigeria and the devastating impacts of the removal of petrol subsidy on Nigerians.

“The council is aware that the current challenges are overwhelming, as those who are just recovering from the aftershocks of terrorism and insecurity are now confronted with economic challenges to the extent that meeting basic needs is now a luxury for the majority of Muslims. For many households, survival is a daily battle as the number of the poor keeps increasing within the ummah.”

Recently, there have been a number of terrorist strikes around the nation, especially in Plateau State. Almost a hundred lives were tragically lost in the Christmas Day attack that occurred in the state’s Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas.

There is a growing national call for the establishment of a stronger and more efficient security system in response to this concerning situation.

The NSCIA has declared the “Ummah Care Initiative” to be launched in response to these occurrences. This programme is intended to help vulnerable members of the Muslim ummah by acting as an emergency palliative intervention in response to the current economic issues. The NSCIA stressed that this endeavour is an addition to the current Federal and State Government aimed at providing assistance to Nigerians.

The council, mentioning Plateau State as a particular example, voiced concern over the reported prejudice against Muslims in various states during the distribution of relief initiatives.

In response, the Ummah Care Initiative seeks to meet the needs of Muslim community members who are marginalised in society around the country.

“After the exercise, the initiative will dissolve into MESH, which will continue with its generic work of alleviating the suffering of Nigerian Muslims, giving hope to the poor, and providing the basic needs to the most vulnerable,” it stated.

The council added that the “strategy of executing this Initiative is based on a five-pronged approach of awareness creation, leadership structure, resource mobilisation, active volunteering and project execution.”
