The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was sent a warning by Tinubu’s administration on Sunday, advising against participating in the two-day statewide demonstration.
The warning was delivered by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, who expressed concerns about possible protest interruptions that would make the already difficult situation worse.
In an interview with The PUNCH, Onanuga called it a “illegal undertaking” and a “breach of the law.”

He said, “The attorney general has written the NLC’s lawyer that the protest is illegal. So, they are breaching a court order if they want to go on with the protest.
“We are not aware of any plans to disrupt the protest, but what we can confirm is that they (NLC) are breaching an extant rule by a competent court that they should not go on protest. The protest itself is illegal. So, the NLC should bear that in mind.”
The administration of Tinubu issued an advisory, but NLC President Joe Ajaero insisted that the demonstration will go ahead on Tuesday and Wednesday as planned.
UPDATE: NLC Ends Two-Day Warning strike
The government’s purported inability to carry out agreements reached by the parties on October 2, 2023, following the elimination of the gasoline subsidy, was the reason given by the NLC when they first declared the protest on February 16.
Additionally, the Federal Government was given a 14-day deadline to address the widespread misery.
