The 120km route that leads to billionaire entrepreneur Aliko Dangote’s refinery in Lagos is named in memory of the late Herbert Wigwe, the former CEO of Access Holdings. The declaration was made at the Eko Hotel in Lagos during a special event called “Celebrating Herbert Wigwe – A Professional Legacy.”

Dangote acknowledged Wigwe’s important contributions to the project during the ceremony, highlighting his commitment and experience. Dangote paid a poignant homage to his late friend, brother, and mentor, Wigwe, expressing his respect and his desire to use this gesture to immortalise Wigwe’s memory.

“To immortalize my beloved friend, my brother, and mentee, I’ve actually decided to name our major refinery and petrochemical road out of the 120km road, the biggest road will now be named Herbert Wigwe,” Dangote remarked.

The announcement comes after the fatal February 9 helicopter crash that killed Herbert Wigwe, his wife Doreen, their son Chizi, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the former group chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group. The incident stunned the business community and the country at large and happened close to a border town in the United States between California and Nevada.

Dangote’s choice to rename the important infrastructure in Wigwe’s honour highlights the enormous influence he had on the undertaking and the respect he was held in by the business community. This action is a mark of respect for Wigwe’s legacy and his priceless contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s industrial sector.

The 120-kilometer road—now known as Herbert Wigwe—is an essential conduit that links Lagos’s larger transportation system to the Dangote refinery and petrochemical complex. In addition to honouring Wigwe, this infrastructural development is evidence of the teamwork that has propelled Nigeria’s industrial and economic progress.
