US Sanctions President Mnangagwa, Blocked Assets, Unofficial Travel Over Abductions, killings, Corruption in Zimbabwe

Emmerson Mnangagwa, the president of Zimbabwe, is under sanctions from the US due to his corruption and violations of human rights.

Other senior government officials are also included by the regulation, which forbids their unapproved entry into the US and freezes their assets there.

A more extensive programme put in place twenty years ago is replaced by these new sanctions.

“We continue to witness gross abuses of political, economic, and human rights,” the White House said in a statement.

“The targeting of civil society and severe restrictions on political activity have stifled fundamental freedoms, while key actors, including government leaders, have siphoned off public resources for personal gains.”

“These illicit activities support and contribute to a global criminal network of bribery, smuggling, and money laundering that impoverish communities in Zimbabwe, southern Africa, and other parts of the world,” it added.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, also brought up the “many instances of abductions, physical mistreatment, and unlawful killings” that have caused dread in Zimbabwe.

“Redirecting and intensifying its endeavours to hold those individuals and organisations accountable for this exploitation” was another pledge made by the White House.
